Hamilton Island Buggy Hire: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Around

Hamilton Island Complimentary Golf Buggy Hire

Summary

There aren’t many holiday destinations where a golf buggy becomes part of the holiday itself.

On Hamilton Island, there are very few conventional cars, and electric golf buggies are one of the main ways visitors travel between their accommodation, the marina, beaches, restaurants, lookouts and activities.

They’re practical, easy to drive and, before long, cruising around the island with the tropical breeze coming through the buggy starts to feel like part of the Hamilton Island experience.

But there are a few things worth knowing before you arrive.

Do you actually need to hire one? How much does Hamilton Island buggy hire cost? Who is allowed to drive? What are the rules for children? How often do you need to charge one? And is it better to choose accommodation that already includes a buggy?

This guide covers everything you need to know.

Table of Contents

Do You Actually Need a Buggy on Hamilton Island?

Strictly speaking, no. Hamilton Island is deliberately easy to navigate without a car. Visitors can walk between many of the main resort-side attractions, and the island operates a complimentary shuttle service.

But having your own buggy gives you something the shuttle doesn’t: freedom.

Want to head down to the marina for breakfast, return home, spend the afternoon at Catseye Beach and drive up to One Tree Hill for sunset? A buggy lets you do all of that without planning around a timetable.

  • your accommodation is away from the main resort precinct
  • you’re travelling with children
  • you’re carrying beach gear or groceries
  • you’re staying with a larger family or group
  • you plan to explore different parts of the island
  • you simply don’t want to walk Hamilton Island’s hills every day

What Does Hamilton Island Buggy Hire Cost?

As of October 2026, Hamilton Island’s own Buggy Hire lists 24-hour hire from $140, four-hour hire at $100 and overnight hire at $120. Child restraints are currently $19 per seat per day, and an optional damage waiver is $19 per day.

Bookings are subject to availability and four hours is the minimum public rental period. Hamilton Island is currently warning visitors that some dates book out months in advance, so if your accommodation doesn’t include a buggy, it is worth organising one early.

Prices and conditions can change, so always check the current rate before travelling.

The HamoRent Difference: Your Buggy May Already Be Included

This is where choosing your accommodation becomes important.

Most HamoRent Hamilton Island properties come with their own electric golf buggy, meaning you may not need to organise separate public buggy hire after booking your accommodation. The number of buggies is clearly shown on HamoRent property listings using the Golf Buggy icon.

For example, Sunset Waters 12 includes one golf buggy, as do many of HamoRent’s apartments and villas. That inclusion can be significant when comparing accommodation prices, particularly if you would otherwise hire a buggy for several days.

One important detail: HamoRent currently applies mandatory Buggy Protection at $10 per day. The buggy itself is included with eligible accommodation, while the protection charge covers accidental, non-negligent damage subject to HamoRent’s conditions.

So when comparing accommodation, look beyond the nightly rate and check whether a buggy is already included.

One Buggy or Two?

A standard Hamilton Island buggy carries a maximum of four people. Hamilton Island lists a maximum payload of about 364kg, while HamoRent’s own conditions specify 363kg for its complimentary buggies.

So if you’re staying in an eight-person holiday home, one buggy will not transport everyone together.

That doesn’t automatically mean you need two. Some groups are perfectly happy combining one buggy with the free shuttle and walking. But if your group expects to travel everywhere together, a second buggy can make the holiday considerably easier.

Who Can Drive a Buggy on Hamilton Island?

For a buggy hired directly through Hamilton Island Buggy Hire, authorised drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a current provisional driver’s licence or above.

HamoRent’s complimentary buggies are privately owned vehicles supplied with individual holiday properties. HamoRent’s current conditions state that only nominated drivers holding a full, valid driver’s licence are permitted to operate the buggy.

So don’t assume the requirements for a public hire buggy and your accommodation’s private buggy are interchangeable. Follow the conditions supplied with your particular property.

Are Golf Buggies Actually Road Vehicles?

Yes. They may feel more relaxed than a car, but Hamilton Island buggies operate on roads where Queensland road rules apply.

Seatbelts must be worn, mobile phones cannot be held while driving, drink-driving rules apply, road signs and parking restrictions must be followed, and passengers must remain properly seated. Hamilton Island’s maximum speed for golf buggies is 20km/h.

They’re easy and fun to drive, but they are not toys.

Can Children Ride in a Hamilton Island Buggy?

Yes, but child-restraint requirements apply.

HamoRent’s current conditions specify a rearward-facing approved infant restraint for infants up to six months, and a forward-facing approved child restraint with an inbuilt harness for children from six months to four years. All restraints must meet Australian safety standards, and children must never sit on the driver’s lap.

Hamilton Island Buggy Hire currently offers child restraints at $19 per seat per day. If you’re travelling with children, confirm the correct restraint requirements before your first buggy trip.

How Long Does a Hamilton Island Buggy Battery Last?

For Hamilton Island’s public hire fleet, the island currently advises that a complete 0-100% charge takes around six hours and provides around three to four hours of continuous driving.

In normal holiday use, you’re unlikely to drive continuously for hours. Most trips involve a few minutes of driving followed by parking at the beach, restaurant, marina or your accommodation.

For HamoRent’s complimentary buggies, the simplest rule is to charge the buggy overnight, every night. HamoRent specifically requires overnight charging and advises that daytime charging can cause the charger to overheat and fail to charge correctly.

Where Can You Drive a Buggy?

Buggies are intended for Hamilton Island’s road network. HamoRent’s conditions specify that its complimentary buggies must only be driven on bitumen and paved roads and must not be taken off road, across grassed areas or into pool areas.

That still gives you easy access to the Marina Village, Catseye Beach and Resort Centre precinct, One Tree Hill, accommodation areas, restaurants, shops and many of the island’s activities.

For remote beaches such as Hideaway Bay, Coral Cove and Escape Beach, you’ll still need to leave the buggy behind and continue on foot along the designated walking trails.

What Time Can You Drive a Buggy?

Hamilton Island’s published island rules state that golf buggies may not be driven between 1:00am and 5:30am. HamoRent guests should follow the same restriction as set out in HamoRent’s buggy conditions.

Outside those hours, drive to the conditions, follow island signage and remember that the 20km/h buggy speed limit still applies.

What Happens if It Rains?

Standard Hamilton Island hire buggies have canopies, so a tropical shower doesn’t necessarily stop you getting around. But they are still open-sided vehicles.

In heavier rain, slow down, allow more stopping distance, take extra care on hills and corners, watch for pedestrians and avoid sudden braking. HamoRent also advises guests to drive slowly on wet or loose surfaces and use extra caution on steep grades and blind corners.

Sometimes the most sensible option during a tropical downpour is simply to park somewhere dry and wait for it to pass.

Don’t Have a Buggy? The Island Shuttle Is Free

A buggy is convenient, but it isn’t essential. Hamilton Island operates a complimentary Island Shuttle for visitors and guests, with routes connecting the Resort Centre, Marina Village and other key parts of the island.

The service runs daily from early morning until late evening, but timetables can change. The Hamilton Island App is the best place to check current shuttle times and live information during your stay.

And Don’t Forget Walking

A lot of Hamilton Island is very walkable. The marina, restaurants, pools, Catseye Beach and resort precinct are close enough that many visitors regularly leave the buggy parked and walk.

And some of the island’s best places can’t be reached by buggy anyway. Hideaway Bay, Coral Cove and Escape Beach are reached through Hamilton Island’s walking trail network.

For many visitors, the ideal transport mix is buggy plus walking plus the occasional shuttle, rather than relying exclusively on one option.

Is Accommodation With a Complimentary Buggy Worth It?

For many Hamilton Island holidays, absolutely.

A buggy gives you the freedom to leave your accommodation whenever you like, explore the island, carry your beach gear, head out for dinner and stop at a lookout simply because the view looks good.

And because public buggy hire currently starts from $140 per 24 hours and availability can become limited during busy periods, having a buggy supplied with your accommodation removes another item from the holiday planning list.

Most HamoRent Hamilton Island properties include an electric golf buggy, and the buggy icon on each accommodation listing makes it easy to see what’s included before booking. Remember that HamoRent’s mandatory Buggy Protection currently applies at $10 per day.
